Personal Learning Adviser (PLA)

The PLA seeks to encourage all personnel at RAF Valley to actively pursue self-improvement through lifelong learning. In particular the PLA provides information and advice on learning, qualifications and career planning. This can be during an advice and guidance interview for an in-depth discussion or may only require a phone call. Information is available on courses such as Open University, University Short Courses, A levels, GCSEs, Information Technology, (ECDL and in-house IT one day courses), The Forces Distance Learning Scheme and recreational classes. The PLA also manages the Interactive Learning Centre (ILC).

Personal Learning Adviser Support Clerk (PLA SP CLK)

The PLA SP CLK maintains awareness of RAF Learning Forces by keeping up to date with changes to Open University Courses, University Short Course Programmes, Forces Distance Learning Schemes, Standard Learning Credits, Enhanced Learning Credits and Resettlement. The PLA SP CLK administers the IT suite, ECDL registrations, all external examinations, co-ordinates bookings for Personal Development interviews, provides a reception service and responds to customer queries and is responsible for the 24 hour Study/Internet Centre.

Resettlement & Education Clerk

The REC can advise on issues connected with resettlement, processes claims for both resettlement and educational issues and arrange resettlement appointments with Dave Oldfield (the Regional Resettlement Adviser). The REC also manages the recreational library. Classrooms and the booking of Internet slots can be made through the REC.

Library

There is a large library in the Learning Centre containing both recreational and reference titles, audio tapes and CDs; there is also a selection of suitable books for children. Requests for books not held in the Station Library may be made to the Services Central Library, or alternatively purchased on request.

Interactive Learning Centre

The ILC is a suite of multi-media PCs with Broadband connectivity (for educational purposes only), therefore designed to meet the needs of those individuals wishing to acquire or enhance IT skills or carry out online learning.

Computer based training is given for ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) as well as one-day IT workshops in Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, Powerpoint, Windows Explorer and will soon be introducing Outlook.

ECDL can be studied at home, in the Learning Centre and if required one to one workshops can be arranged with the ECDL assessor who is also a qualified IT tutor.

24 Hour Access Study Suite

This room is designed to offer a quiet environment in which to read or research. It contains college and course information. There is access to the Internet via a dedicated PC, a stand alone PC and desk for studying at.

Should this room be required outside normal working hours of the learning centre contact the REC or PLA SP CLK, to obtain a card which will give access at any time.

Local Learning Providers

RAF Valley has close links with the local college, Coleg Menai and has designed, in partnership with the college, a series of short courses. These include Bricklaying, Carpentry, Plastering, Plumbing, Electrical Installation, IT Basic Electronics and Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. They are 5 day courses held at one of the college sites.

*These courses are dependant on the number of students who enrol.

If you require any further information on any of the courses available please contact any of the Learning Centre Staff.
